The Perfect Font For Your Next Design Project
Typefaces can literally make or break a brand identity project.
For a logo lockup it can quite literally take up more than 50% of the mark itself. That's why we need to ensure it is the right pick and we use it correctly.
Here's how to do it:
1) Readability is the NUMBER ONE priority.
If the font doesn't read well, don't use it.
Functionality is our main focus here when starting any project.
So before we even choose our font, keep this in mind.
It is that simple.
2) Finding the right font website For me Google Fonts is much superior to DaFont.
You're going to find much more readable fonts to download over there.
You'll have much better luck with licensing and them being free for commercial use too.
3) Drop the weight
A general rule I go by is to drop the weight by two when adding in a slogan or creating body text.
So for example - If your logo font is 'Extra Bold': Skip 'Bold' and apply 'Medium'.
It always give it that clean look we're looking for.
4) Experiment with contrast
You'd actually be quite surprised:
A Serif title can work really well with a Sans Serif body text and vice versa.
You don't just have to stick to one font. But I would limit it to two fonts maximum per project.
Any more is overkill.
5) Prioritize Spacing and Alignment
A lot of fonts aren't already kerned for you.
Make sure we pay attention to the spacing between letters, words, and lines (kerning, tracking, and leading).
This is to ensure we optimize readability.
6) Consider Brand Personality
Select fonts that actually fit the brand's personality, voice, and target audience.
Fonts can give different emotions and feelings.
Serif: Luxury, Trust.
Sans Serif: Clean, Minimal.
Take this into account when installing your next font.
Take care,
